Weddings ceremonies in Christchurch

Christchurch is one of New Zealand's most beautiful cities for outdoor weddings — and Hayley knows it better than most. Based in New Brighton, she's conducted ceremonies at the Botanic Gardens, on the city's restored heritage sites, at private gardens in Fendalton and Merivale, and on the sweeping beaches of New Brighton and Sumner. Every location has its own character, and every ceremony Hayley creates is shaped by both — the place and the people being married there.

Popular venues and settings

  • Christchurch Botanic Gardens — rose gardens and lily ponds
  • New Brighton Beach — golden hour light, Pacific views
  • Sumner — beach setting with Cave Rock backdrop
  • Private gardens in Fendalton, Merivale, and Halswell
  • Restored heritage venues in the inner city
  • Mona Vale historic homestead and gardens

Local tip from Hayley

For an early evening ceremony at New Brighton Beach, the pier casts a dramatic silhouette in the late light — positioning the couple with the pier in the background creates one of Christchurch's most iconic ceremony backdrops.

Questions

Weddings in Christchurch — FAQ

Common questions about weddings ceremonies in Christchurch.

It depends on your vision. For coastal drama, New Brighton and Sumner are stunning — golden hour light, Pacific views, and the possibility of the pier in the background. For garden romance, the Botanic Gardens and private properties in Fendalton and Merivale offer established plantings and softer light. For something more contemporary, the inner city's restored spaces and rooftop venues have their own character. Hayley knows all of these locations well and can advise on timing, positioning, and logistics for each.

The nor'wester — Canterbury's warm mountain wind — can be strong and gusty in spring and summer. For outdoor ceremonies, this means anchoring paperwork (signing tables need weights), positioning the couple with their backs to the prevailing wind so voices carry forward, and considering a PA system for any ceremony with more than about 30 guests. Hayley plans for this in every outdoor ceremony and has good contingency protocols for when it picks up unexpectedly.

Yes — and these are some of Hayley's favourite settings. Established private gardens in Fendalton, Merivale, and Halswell have a mature, romantic character you won't find in a hired venue. The ceremony is yours to shape entirely. Hayley will visit the location before the day to assess positioning, logistics, and any practical considerations for the ceremony setup.

Christchurch's peak wedding season runs December through February, with summer Saturdays booking out 12–18 months in advance. For popular months, earlier is always safer. If you have your venue locked in, locking in your celebrant soon after makes sense — particularly if your date falls on a summer Saturday. Hayley does take short-notice bookings where her calendar allows, so it's always worth asking.
